Things I Learned Walking in the Grand Canyon

My first-time (and possibly last) hiking experience through the Grand Canyon, Rim to Rim, was an adventure I'll never forget. As a first-time backpacker, I faced more than a few unique challenges that taught me valuable lessons. Despite the extensive research I had done to prepare for the trip, there were still surprises along the way. I decided to compile a list of things I learned from my experience, in hopes that my insights will help other travelers in the future.

One of the most important things I learned was the importance of packing light and bringing only the essentials. The weight of the backpack can become an issue on long hikes (our longest day being 12 miles), so carrying only what's necessary can make a gigantic difference.

Another important lesson I learned was the importance of staying hydrated and planning water intake properly. Being hydrated is super important, not just to stay safe, but to have an enjoyable hike. Lastly, taking time to appreciate the “once in a lifetime” surroundings that no man could ever make, and cute critter wildlife is essential to the overall experience. Despite the challenges, taking in the breathtaking views (from within and high up) of the canyon made it all worth it.

Overall, hiking the Grand Canyon, Rim to Rim, was an extremely humbling experience. I feel so fortunate that I got the opportunity to do it.
